Kids love to decorate cakes and cupcakes. For your next slumber party, why not let the kids decorate their own cupcakes, instead of putting yourself through the stress of decorating them ahead of time?
Here's an easy idea the girls can recreate themselves using strawberries, a little decorator icing, and some fruit roll ups.
- Ingredients
-
- other assorted cake decorator tips
- disposable decorator bags
- strawberries, washed with stems (1 per cupcake)
- kitchen scissors
- Fruit Roll-Ups (1 can decorate 2 cupcakes)
- Instructions
-
1.
Prepare the decorator icing ahead of time. Use the food coloring to color the icing a fun, vibrant color. Make sure to leave some icing white for the eyes, and leave the pink icing for the mouth.
2.
Have stations set up for your party guests:
- Station #1 should have cupcakes and some of the colored icing in a bowl.
- Station #2 should have some more colored icing in decorator bags with some more colored icing and Wilton #12 wide decorator tips attached.
- Station #3 will have the strawberries, and white icing in decorator bags with Wilton #4 tips attached.
- Station #4 will have pink icing in a decorator bag with a Wilton #4 decorator tip attached.
- Station #5 sill have the Fruit Roll-Ups and kitchen scissors.
3.
When the girls arrive, let them go ahead and decorate their cupcakes, one or two girls at a time can start through the stations. Have them start by icing their cupcakes at Station #1.
4.
At Station #2 they'll use the wide, round decorator tip to pipe a pillow onto one side of the cupcake.
5.
At Station #3 have them gently push the strawberry into the icing pillow, with the top of the strawberry toward the outside and the narrower tip toward the center of the cupcake.
7.
At the last station, have the girls unroll and cut their Fruit Roll-Up blankets to size, about 1 1/2-inches long by about 3-inches wide. Then, the girls should lay the Fruit Roll-Up over the narrow end of the strawberry. You may want to unroll and cut the Roll-Ups ahead of time if you have younger girls. Each Roll-Up should work for 2 cupcakes.
8.
You can leave out some extra icing in decorator bags with tips for the girls to add ruffles or patterns to their blankets, or to give their strawberry extra hair. When they're done the girls can eat their creations!
- Tips
- Make a sample Slumber Party Cupcake ahead of time to show the girls what they will be making (or just show them the photos here).
- If the weather is warm, storing the fruit rollups in the refrigerator until you're ready to use them will make them easier to work with.
