Winter Craft Ideas for Kids and Families

Winter Bloom Container
An art activity that will add springtime cheer to a dreary winter day!

You'll Need:

Clean margarine, cottage cheese or sour cream container
Glue stick
Craft paper, markers, stickers etc.
Decorative stones, gravel or marbles
plant bulbs (paperwhites, hyacinth, narcissus)

First, cover the plastic container with paper, using your glue stick.
Decorate the paper with stickers, glitter pens, marker drawings etc.
Fill the container 1/2 - 3/4 with stones. We used colored decorative
stones for fun, but plain gravel will work as well.
Set your plant bulbs onto the stones, pushing them down far enough to
be held in an upright position. Place several bulbs together.
When forcing bulbs you won't need to worry about crowding.
Add water just to the bottom of the bulb. Too much water, may
cause your bulbs to rot and there will be no blooms.

Place the container in a cool dark place for one or two weeks,
or until the roots have started and you see the plant emerge from the bulb.
Then place your bloom pot in a sunny, indoor location.
Blooming will begin within 4-6 weeks depending on the plant type.

Tip: Make several containers in succession for blooms all winter long.

Puzzle Game for Kids

My kids and I made this project over the holidays using a Christmas theme for decorating. It can be just as easily made with a snowman, snowflake
or a Valentine's Day image.

Making this puzzle game will involve Mom or Dad but the kids can help and certainly do the decorating. To make the puzzle, you'll need a small plastic margarine tub with a lid .Paint or cover the lid with paper.

Draw a picture in the center. We used construction paper to make our images. Use a ball point pen or a screw driver to make 2-5 holes in the top. Add as many seed beads as there are holes. Cover the top with plastic wrap and then and secure onto the margarine tub. This should keep the plastic wrap in place. Now your game is ready to play. The object of the puzzle game is to get as many ball into the holes as possible.
They will collect in the base of the tub.
