HORSE OR PONY BIRTHDAY PARTY DECORATIONS
Set your table with matching horse party items and
solid colored plates
in yellow, green and blue.
Cover the table in a white sheet, my personal party favorite!
Cut horse photos from an inexpensive calendar (dollar store).
Glue them to a strip of green felt, or butcher paper to fashion
a unique table runner. Add individual place settings, using
toy horses.
Write the guests' names on the horses, with a permanent marker. Tie
a balloon bouquet to a favorite Breyer horse and place it as a
table centerpiece. Decorate the party area with
balloons and
streamers.
If you have horse tack available, then add that to the party area
with a
few posters of horses.
Advanced Decorating for your party...
If you are inclined to "go all out" when decorating for a birthday
party...
this is a classic theme to have fun with!
Add bails of hay with a real saddle somewhere in your party room,
or at the entrance. this will make for a convenient photo
opportunity
later in the party. Create a wild horse background for your wall
using
green butcher paper, horse poster or calendar photos, tissue paper
trees etc. Mount pony and horse posters all around the party room.
Add horse tack wherever possible.
A Giddy-up Party Welcome!
Welcome your little party ponies with a horse headband and tail.
Use a hot glue gun to attach felt ears to a plastic headband.
Making the tail will require plenty of yarn. Loop the yarn around a
large book, approximately 25 times.
Secure one end of the loops together with a shorter piece of yarn.
Cut the other ends so that the pieces hang freely.Tie a large piece
of ribbon to the yarn tail so that it can tied around the waist.
HORSE PARTY GAMES AND ACTIVITIES
The games and activities you choose for your party, will depend on
the
size of your party space, whether your party is held indoors or
outdoors
and the ages of the children. Prepare 2-3 games and one craft
activity.
We also recommend that you be prepared with an extra no-fuss game,
just in case.

Horse Round-Up
Hide toy horses throughout the party area and yard. Send the little
wranglers to collect them.
Pony Course
Round up the wild ponies for a fun obstacle course.
Before the party, use the Internet to find and print a picture of a
horse head. Use this for tracing onto cardstock paper.
Color and cut the heads and then staple them to the top of wood
dowels.
How many you'll need will vary depending on the size of your party.
The children will use these "horses" to travel through a simple
obstacle course you've created with trees, shrubs, buckets, saw
horses etc.
You can play this as a race with two teams, or simply play fun music
and have the children gallop the course.
Variation:
Try teaching the children the difference between galloping,
trotting, cantering and running. When you holler out a stride...the
player will change.
Horse Race
Use the same "horse" explained above, to play a racing game.
Place carpet squares in a loop or straight line on the ground.
Write number 0-3 onto index cards. Two players at a time will
take turns selecting number cards and then move forward that many
squares. Whoever gets to the end first, wins the race.
Variation: You can also play this game using a smaller game board
and
plastic toy horses.
Bobbing for Apples
Play this traditional game using a horse's favorite treat.
Sugar Stack
Give each payer a pile of of sugar cubes. Set a Timer.
When you say "go" the children will race to build the tallest stack
of sugar cubes in the allotted time.
Horse Shoes
Use a plastic set for your players.
Pin the Tail on the the Pony
Adapt this traditional party game, using a horse instead of a
donkey.
You may want to enlist a talented teen to draw a tail-less horse on
poster board. Make tails with card stock paper. Use double stick
tape or "sticky-tack" to attach the tails to the game board.
Mustang Tag
One player is the designated "wrangler" and the other players are
the mustangs. When a Mustang is tagged by the wrangler, that player
becomes the new wrangler and so one. Ensure fair play with this game
to avoid one player being tagged repeatedly.
Horse, Horse, Pony
Play this party game just as you would Duck, duck, goose.
Play the Story Game
You probably remember this concept from Girl scouts or Sunday
school.
Sit the players in a circle. Have several theme words written a head
of time on small slips of paper:
Wild Pony, In the meadow, It was a winter's eve etc.
The first person selects the theme...starts the story with the first
phrase and then each player continues the story one phrase at a
time.
HORSE BIRTHDAY CRAFTS
Dazzling Horse Shoes
Go to a local feed or farm supply to purchase used horse shoes.
Spray them with gold or silver spray paint before the party.
Your local crafts store will have plastic gems to glue on with craft
glue.
The guests can write their names with fabric paint.
These can be hung from their bedroom doors!
Tissue Flowers
Create a meadow filled with tissue paper
flowers.
Although it's not specifically
a horse craft, it is a fun addition to
this party theme.
Beading
Bead a necklace with plastic lanyard, pony beads and
a horseshoe charm (craft store).
Doorknob Hanger
Purchase craft foam doorknob hangers (craft store). The children can
use
horse stickers and gel pens to decorate.
BIRTHDAY PARTY TREATS
Feeding your hungry herd will take more than oats and apples.
If you are choosing a western theme to go with the horse interest
serve hot dogs, baked beans and "Roy Rogers" or root beer Floats.
Otherwise, serve sandwiches cut with a pony or horseshoe cookie
cutter,
carrots and veggie dip, apple wedges, trail mix, licorice whip
lassos and
cupcakes topped with a small horse.
The easiest horse birthday cake to make is created with a green
frosted
sheet cake. Use a decorating tube to add yellow meadow flowers.
then randomly place small horses on the top of the cake.
