CONSTRUCTION BIRTHDAY PARTY GAMES AND ACTIVITIES
Party Games Tip
If you are hosting a party for young children, we suggest giving every player a small prize after all of the games are played. Birthday parties are not the time to teach life lessons of winning, losing or sportsmanship...
they are just supposed to be fun!

We've provided several construction themed party games. Select the games that best suit the age of your child and party space. For larger parties divide the children into teams. Before the party, mark children's plastic hard hats with strips of colored electrical tape to separate the teams.

Build-It with Blocks
Children will use cardboard "brick" blocks to build a tower as high as they can within a designated period of time.

Dirt Mover
Provide each team or player with a kids-safe hand shovel,
pail and a pile of dirt. Place the pail a reasonable distance from the pile of dirt. Each player will take a shovel of dirt from the pile to the bucket until the pail is full. This game can be played as a relay race with team players taking turns, or children will race against each other.

Construction Zone Obstacle Course
Requires a large space or backyard.
Set a up an obstacle course with piles of dirt, tires, stepping stones, caution tape and any other safe items you can think of. To play, the children will go through the "Construction Zone" as fast as they can.
They will probably want to run the course several times.

Tool-Belt Relay
This game is best for children 5 and older.
Divide the children into teams.
Provide each team with one empty tool belt.
Place kid - safe tools for each team (hammer, screw driver, wrench etc)
a reasonable distance from the start of the race.

When you say "GO" the first player of each team will put on the tool belt, run to the tools and fill the belt. Then, run back to their team and pass the filled tool belt to the next player, who will put on the tool-belt and race
to empty it and return to the next player with an empty tool-belt.
This continues until all players have had a turn.
Each player can receive their own tool kit as a prize.
Variation - have older children put on safety goggles,
gloves and a hard hat in addition to the belt. -
Don't forget your camera!

Make and Take Construction Activity
Before the party prepare several blocks of wood, dowel
pieces, sandpaper, wood glue etc.
During the party, provide a protected work space where the children can sand, glue, and with an adults help, hammer their own creation to take home.
Tip: Cut foam sanding blocks into pieces to make small blocks for little hands. These blocks are easier for little hands to manage than pieces of sandpaper.

Activities for Younger children
If your entertaining toddlers or preschool aged children at your party,
these "station" activities may be best. Prepare a few activitiesahead of
time and allow the children some "free play".

#1
Before the party create a "construction site" in the yard or sandbox
with trucks, shovels etc.
#2
Set up wood, foam or cardboard building blocks for free-play.
#3
Before the party make a big truck by painting a large cardboard box. Provide bean bags for the children to toss into the "dump truck".
#4
Purchase die-cut shapes and stickers to match the theme.
Provide glue sticks markers and a sheet of paper for the children to make a collage with the shapes and stickers.

CONSTRUCTION PARTY FAVORS

CONSTRUCTION BIRTHDAY CAKE IDEAS
Fun and easy birthday cakes to match this theme.

Edible Dump Truck
Fill a new clean Toy dump truck with chunks of chocolate pound cake, and scoops of ice cream. Top with whipped topping and "sprinkles". Then add your birthday candles.

Construction Zone Cake
Make a sheet cake. Frost it with chocolate and green frosting.
Form "dirt mounds with chocolate frosting and cookie crumbs.
Top with small toy dump trucks and bulldozers.
Kit's Tip: No time to bake a cake? Order a plain or frosted-only cake
from your local bakery or grocery store bakery department...you can decorate it yourself with a few small toys or construction vehicle candles.

Kit's Party Tip:
Little construction workers can get awfully hungry...
make some simple sandwiches and cut them with construction
vehicle cookie cutters. Serve with juice boxes and fruit kabobs before
cake and ice cream.
