Movie Night
Sometimes, it's all about "unwinding" together after a hectic week, and a family movie night is entirely the way to go. The biggest challenges you'll face together are choosing the movie and deciding if you want butter on your popcorn!
Getting Started
Picking a movie that everyone will like can be a bit of a challenge. Be sure to check out Kaboose's Family Movie Reviews in order to get some ideas. As well, consider the mood you're looking for: do you want a little bit of action and adventure? Or are you looking for a film that will tickle your funnybone? Don't be afraid to visit some of the older musicals, or classic films as an option either as many of them are not only highly entertaining, but also have great messages for kids.
Make it an Event
It's easy to just casually have everyone migrate towards the movie in their own time. Instead, try setting a time the way you would if you were going to the theater. Make sure you've set up your snacks, finished the after-dinner chores and are all ready to go. Go all the way with the illusion by setting up your own box office, give the kids tickets to present and make an older sibling or a parent the "usher", taking them to their seats. Dim the lighting and sit back and relax when the "curtain goes up"!
Other Ideas
Consider having an intermission half-way through so that the kids (and adults!) can have a potty break. As well, this is a perfect time to replenish snacks. Start with a vintage cartoon before your movie in order to recreate the "old-fashioned" movie experience. Consider having your snack theme fit the theme of your film. For example, if you're enjoying the Jungle Book, why not eat animal crackers and banana-themed snacks! The more of an event you make the evening, the more you will enjoy it together.
