Your Kindergarten Student Will Learn
Top 10 skills your child should learn this year.

In kindergarten, the major goal is to help children become comfortable in
the school setting. They'll learn how to get along with others, listen to
the teacher and follow instructions. The academic focus at this age is to introduce the basic skills needed for reading, writing and math.

Every school has different expectations. Ask the teacher for the district's goal or, state benchmarks for this grade.

In Kindergarten Students may learn to:
  • Recognize and form upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
  • Match sounds to each alphabet letter.
  • Recognize and use rhyming words.
  • Begin reading words with common consonant sound patterns like an and at (ran, man, can, cat, rat, mat).
  • Capitalize the first and last name of a person and the word "I".
  • Count, recognize, and write the numbers up to twenty.
  • Recognize and create patterns such as A A B A A B
    or cat, dog, cat, dog and so on.
  • Identify, draw, cut, basic shapes.
  • Classify and sort objects according to shape, color, size, texture, and so on.
  • Identify days of the week and seasons of the year.
