The second grade school year begins with review and reinforcement of the skills taught in first grade.
Students will learn to recognize familiar words more rapidly, read new words, write more complex sentences, spell new words, add and subtract faster and increase their vocabulary.
Every school differs in expectations. Ask the teacher for the district's
goal or, state benchmarks for this grade.
In 2nd Grade Students may learn to: |
- Apply more complex phonics skills in their reading.
- Automatically read the 200 most commonly used words.
- Write sentences using correct punctuation and capitalization.
- Recognize and use nouns and action verbs in sentences.
- Write in cursive.
- Use alphabetical order.
- Add and subtract any 2-digit number.
- Introduce place value concepts for 3-digit whole numbers.
- Read time by hour, half hour and 15 min. intervals.
- Identify the value of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters,
half-dollars, and dollars.
