Your 1st Grader Will Learn

Top 10 skills your child should learn this year.

The first grade year is a big milestone...your child will learn to adjust to
a longer more demanding school day. Academic focus will be on learning
to read independently and write legibly. Students may also have some homework assignments. Eating at school and going to and from school
with limited assistance will develop their independence.

Each school has different expectations. Ask the teacher for the district's goal or, state benchmarks for this grade.

In 1st Grade Students may learn to:
  • Sound out words through knowledge of consonants,
    vowels and blends.
  • Write words by sounding out consonants and vowels. Proper spelling is not stressed
  • Read at least 100 sight words.
  • Locate the main idea and details in stories.
  • Recall the sequence of events in oral and written stories.
