Homemade crafts help make Mother's Day special. Flowers are always a thoughtful gift for Mom, but how about creating a Mother's Day Flower Box Garden Craft with the whole family? Start a new annual tradition, and watch the flowers bloom!

Materials
  • a garden container (window box, terracotta pot, wooden planter box, etc.)
  • decorating tools (permanent markers, paint)
  • a separate plant for each member of the family
  • planting mix
Instructions
    1.
Before adding soil, work together to decorate your container. You can write your family name, a special message, draw pictures, etc.
    2.
Fill your planter box about 1/3 full with planting mix.
    3.
Instruct your kids how to plant their flowers by gently removing them from their containers, loosening the roots (very gently) and placing them in the soil.
    4.
Add enough soil to cover the roots and gently press down. A little more soil will likely be needed.
    5.
Then water. Take turns watering throughout the season, and watch your family's flowers grow all summer long!
Tips
  • Planter boxes can be adapted using your own creativity and made to represent the uniqueness of your family.
  • If you use a plastic planter, use permanent markers to decorate it, but you can use paint on a wooden or terracotta planter.
  • If you have children in college or no longer living with you – don't forget to select a flower for them.
  • You can add alyssum for filler.
