It's hard to be healthy during Halloween, a holiday that is known for its delicious treats and sugar overload! Here's a healthy Halloween craft that is sweet but not sugary, and is a fun activity for preschoolers: an Orange Jack-o'-Lantern. My 4 year-old made this project by himself with just a few words of instruction from me. If you have older kids, make this treat as a surprise for their lunchboxes.
- Materials
-
- 1 orange, regular size or a small variety like mandarin or tangerine
- 2 googly eyes
- black self-stick craft foam
- ½ green pipe cleaner stem
- 2 glue dots
- scissors
- pencil
- Instructions
-
1.
Cut out a jack-o'-lantern mouth and triangle-shaped nose from the self-stick craft foam.
2.
Place a glue dot on the back of 1 googly eye and adhere it to the orange. Repeat with the second googly eye.
3.
Stick craft foam nose and mouth to orange.
4.
Wrap the half piece of green pipe cleaner stem around pencil to make it curly.
5.
Stick the curly stem into the top of the orange.
- Tips
- Make it with Preschoolers: Pre-cut nose and mouth and lay out materials for your preschooler. Verbally give him the instructions step-by-step and let him do it himself! You might need to demonstrate some of the steps, but let him try to do it alone first.
- Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Banana: Use a banana (or other peel-able fruit) for a funny twist on the Orange Jack-O'-Lantern.
