Materials
  • plain canvas tote bags. You can get these in various sizes from your local craft store. They usually come in white or beige, and the three-packs run about $10 (use the coupons they run in the Sunday paper for more savings).
  • fabric marker or paint
  • stencil or doily
Instructions
    1.
Decide on the design that you want before you get started, particularly the location of where you will put the stencil or doily.

    2.
Put your stencil or doily down on the tote bag and use the fabric marker or paint and fill in the white areas. If kids are helping with this craft, or if it's easier for you, you might want to tape your doily or stencil in place. For the girls' bags, I used a doily as the stencil, using the fabric marker to color in all the open areas. I then put their first initial in the open circle area of each one. I drew the initial freehand, but a stencil for that would work well too.

Tips
Beyond Mother's Day, these personalized tote bags can be used for many other gifting situations. Other examples include first day of summer (perfect beach bag; use a beach ball stencil and put the person's initial in the center of the ball), a personalized gardening tote bag for your favorite gardener (filled with assorted gardening tools), or a sleepover bag. The possibilities are endless, and it's a unique, yet practical, gift that everyone will love.
